The Laptop/Cellphone Private Investigator

Previously I wrote about the field of Private Investigations being the perfect, self-reliant career. Some PIs choose a career route that keeps them working for a small Private Investigation agency while others want to develop a large, full service agency that hires investigators of various specialties. I am going to describe the path that many Private Investigators take – the Laptop PI. He is the lone wolf of the Private Investigation industry.

The Laptop PI is an investigator who prefers to work alone; he is only connected to others in the industry for purposes of receiving cases, trading cases and keeping up on technological trends in the business. He has two offices the car and the home den. He would never buy an immobile desktop, as his laptop and Internet access cell phone act as a mobile office.

The laptop PI discrete. He has his residence in a trust, his utilities are not in his name, his cell phone is paid in person with cash every month and the billing address is a mailbox company. He has no intention of ever getting a landline phone. His new Internet Air Card now gives him the freedom to do business anywhere. No more looking for hotspots. None of the lowlife characters of cases past will be able to track him down.

His clients include individuals in other PI agencies, several attorneys and a few wronged husbands and wives. Hard-to-solve cases are always on his mind and a new tactic may come to his attention day or night, while at work or play.

Because the Laptop PI has very little overhead, he can clear up his cases and take time off several times a year. The work always starts back up when he returns. His major expenses are his cell phone, Internet Air Card, insurance and license renewal fees. The rat race is not for him.

Consider a career where the expenses are low, the profit substantial and the freedom non-negotiable!

The Laptop Private Investigator

My last article was about choosing a self-reliant career in the field of Private Investigations. In this article I would like to outline the route that most Private Investigators take after finishing their internship or gaining a few years of experience. Some investigators prefer to work for an agency, obtaining steady work and not worrying about administrative tasks such as bookkeeping or knocking on doors to market clients. Other investigators dream of launching a large agency that hires investigators of various specialties and offers every kind of investigative service imaginable to its clients. Today I am going to focus on the Laptop PI, the lone wolf of the Private Investigation world.

The Laptop Private Investigator prefers to work alone or with a tight group of alliances. His office is both his car and his den at home. Forget the immobile desktop computer; his laptop and Internet access cell phone get the job done from anywhere in the world.

The Laptop Private Investigator usually takes what seems like excessive measures to remain off the radar screen. His residence is in a trust, his name is not attached to his utilities billing, he pays his cell phone bill in person every month and has no landline phone. His laptop has an “Internet Air Card” which allows him to do business from anywhere. In all public and government databases it looks like he ceased to exist 10 years ago.

He does a good business with several attorneys, a string of wronged husbands or wives, professional suers, and occasionally he subcontracts for PI agencies. His mind is always on his cases as the solution or an ingenuous new direction always comes to him in his off time.
