6 Week Body Makeover – Your Diet is Making You Fat

Your diet is making you fat. The reason is simple: diets slow down your metabolism. Storing fat is your bodies survival mechanism to keep you from starving to death during long periods of not eating, or not getting enough caloric intake. Hence, going on a reduced calorie diet actually kicks in your bodies survival mechanism to slow down your metabolism as your body thinks it’s going into starvation mode.

Your metabolism is based on primordial instincts and evolution. When your brain thinks there is not enough food, it will purposely store food as fat so that you can survive for a longer period of time until you find your next meal. When you diet, you automatically trigger this survival mechanism.

When you eat less, your body will burn calories at a slower rate. This means that less calories will be burned for energy and more calories will be stored and converted into fat cells. Eating less will not help you lose weight. Some people actually gain weight when dieting because of the explanation listed above.

Eating more meals (and smaller portions) will actually make you lose more weight. The reason is that when you eat more meals, your brain thinks that food is abundant and will not trigger the survival mode effect. If your body is not in survival mode, you will burn calories faster and this will lead to weight loss.

Training your metabolism to get out of survival mode will benefit you in the long run. Matter of fact, you will be able to eat fatty foods (once in awhile) and you will still lose weight. Unlike traditional diets, once you learn how to eat correctly, even having a slice of pizza or a beer once in awhile won’t hurt your weight loss goals.
