Are You Tanning Without Accelerators?

So, do you have to have a tanning accelerator to tan? Are they worth the investment (because lets face it they can be very expensive)? This article is intended to parse fact and fiction about tanning accelerators.

It is important to understand what is happening to your body when you tan. When your body is exposed to UV rays, your skin will produce melanin to help protect yourself from the rays. The sunburn occurs when your body does not make enough melanin to protect itself. Well, as you may be able to assume, tanning accelerators supposedly help expedite the melanin creation process so that less time is needed exposed to UV rays.

The actual ingredients you should look for in your tanning lotion are Psoralen and Tyrosin. These two things are actually amino acids that speed up your bodies’ production of melanin.

While tanning accelerators are not a necessity, they actually do really help. They speed up the process of tanning. For me, they even make my color more bronzey and less red.

Strangely enough, you can actually buy tanning pills that contain these amino acids. These vitamins supposedly help your body produce the melanin that makes you tan. The idea is that the vitamins just aid in the natural process of tanning. However, there are critics of tanning pills.

I guess the debate is out there. I guess the only thing that you can do is test products for yourself and see what works for you. Researching ingredients and then looking at the ingredients in the tanning lotions is the smartest thing you can do. You may find all the ingredients you are looking for in a less expensive lotion.
