Difference Between Fixed and Comprehensive Visitor Medical Insurance Plans
There are two main types of visitors insurance. These two forms are fixed rate policies and comprehensive policies. Different providers will either offer one or the other, but sometimes they can offer both.
Fixed benefits provide a maximum amount of coverage for each type of medical expense. This means that the policies total limit will not be paid for every type of medical treatment and that each class of medical expense is considered separately.
If an injury such as a broken arm is suffered on the trip, the policy will only cover the costs of treatment up to the stated maximum for each class of expense (limit for MRIs, limit for ER fees etc). The policy holder would have to pay the balance. In the event of multiple treatments being needed, each would be considered separately and this can become very expensive for the policy holder. Of course, the odds of suffering multiple injuries on a trip are fairly low and this should be considered.
Fixed rate policies work best for frugal shoppers, as the premiums are typically much lower than with other plans. Basic coverage for anyone willing to expose themselves to some amount of risk still provides low-level protections for the traveler.
Comprehensive visitor health insurance covers any injury up to the entire policy maximum. In this manner, multiple problems will be covered as long as their total amount of expense does not exceed the whole policy maximum amount.
To compare the two types of policies, a traveler that acquires an infection on their trip would experience very different out-of-pocket expenses. With the comprehensive visitor insurance, the company would allow using the entire policy benefit amount if necessary toward this one illness. However, a fixed rate policy would limit the coverage to a predetermined amount, leaving the remaining costs up to the traveler.
The largest difference between the two options is that comprehensive visitors medical insurance will cost more but offer a high degree of payout for any condition. A fixed rate policy will have similar policy maximums but the costs may be much less than a comprehensive plan.
The most important thing to remember is that insurance for visitors of any type is absolutely vital for international travelers. Many benefits of health insurance for visitors can be utilized through a comprehensive or fixed rate policy. Some coverage is better than none to prevent financial and physical ruin while travelling abroad.
